Making your social media profile images POP (and mistakes to avoid)

YOU DID IT! You started your own Instagram account, Facebook page, LinkedIn profile, etc to introduce and promote your business to the world. The first thing your future customers will see is your profile image…so you have to make sure it looks polished and professional so your business also comes across as polished and professional. A poorly cropped profile images, for example, looks like you either don’t know what you’re doing, or you don’t care enough to change it. So here are my tips:

  1. A profile image is SMALL. Avoid using an image with tons of text that can’t be read. It makes your profile image ‘muddy’, messy and illegible

  2. Caution on the crop! Use a square or rectangle file with a background. Transparent logos will default to a black background and a circle image could include an unwanted ring around your image. Adjust the crop so everything is showing. This might mean you need an image with a larger blank background and a smaller logo in the middle.

  3. Simplify your text. Include a business nickname or initials, or don’t include the tag line. This way the minimal text you’ve included really shines.

  4. Remember, people will click on your profile to learn more information. So make sure your profile image is interesting to draw them in!
